What Is QuickBooks Error 1328?

Windows uses a hidden folder called Config.Msi to store temporary files while programs install. If a previous install or update didn't finish cleanly, leftover files in that folder can block the next one, and QuickBooks shows Error 1328. You may see it:

  • Installing QuickBooks Desktop for the first time
  • Installing a QuickBooks update or release
  • Repairing QuickBooks from Control Panel
  • Uninstalling QuickBooks

Why Does Error 1328 Happen?

1

Leftover files in Config.Msi

A previous install that was interrupted leaves temporary files behind that conflict with the new install.

2

Damaged installer download

An incomplete or corrupted download can't write its files properly.

3

Antivirus blocking the installer

Security software can stop the installer from updating files.

4

Not enough permissions

Installing without administrator rights can cause file update errors.

5

A damaged existing QuickBooks install

Updating a broken install sometimes fails until it's repaired or reinstalled.

How to Fix QuickBooks Error 1328, Step by Step

FIX #1

Rename the Config.Msi Folder

Step 1 Open File Explorer and go to your C: drive.

Step 2 Click View and turn on Hidden items. In Windows 11 it's under View > Show > Hidden items.

Step 3 Find the Config.Msi folder. If you can't see it, also untick Hide protected operating system files under Folder Options.

Step 4 Right-click Config.Msi, choose Rename and call it Config.Msi.old.

Step 5 Run the QuickBooks installer or update again.

It's safe. Windows recreates the Config.Msi folder automatically the next time something installs.

FIX #2

Run the QuickBooks Install Diagnostic Tool

Step 1 Open the QuickBooks Tool Hub (download the latest from Intuit if you don't have it).

Step 2 Click Installation Issues, then QuickBooks Install Diagnostic Tool.

Step 3 Let it run. It can take up to 20 minutes and repairs Windows components QuickBooks depends on.

Step 4 Restart your computer and try the install again.

FIX #3

Download a Fresh Installer and Run It as Administrator

Step 1 Delete the installer you downloaded earlier.

Step 2 Download a fresh copy from the official link in your purchase email or our download guides.

Step 3 Right-click the new installer and choose Run as administrator.

FIX #4

Pause Antivirus During the Install

Step 1 Temporarily pause your antivirus protection.

Step 2 Run the installer or update.

Step 3 Turn your antivirus back on as soon as it finishes, and add QuickBooks folders to its exclusions.

FIX #5

Repair or Clean Install QuickBooks

Step 1 Open Control Panel > Programs and Features, select QuickBooks and choose Uninstall/Change > Repair.

Step 2 If the error appears during repair, uninstall QuickBooks completely.

Step 3 Run the Clean Install Tool from the Tool Hub's Installation Issues section.

Step 4 Reinstall QuickBooks with your license and product numbers.

How to Prevent Error 1328

  • Let installs and updates finish; don't restart or shut down partway through
  • Download installers only from official links
  • Restart your computer before installing big updates
  • Keep at least a few GB of free disk space
