Is QuickBooks Desktop Being Discontinued? Here's What's Actually Happening
The real story, not the clickbait version.
If you've searched this question, you've probably found a dozen articles that all say something different. Some say QuickBooks Desktop is dead. Others say nothing has changed. A fair number of them are quietly trying to move you onto QuickBooks Online.
So let's skip the guessing and stick to what Intuit has actually done. Once you see the timeline, the whole thing makes a lot more sense, and you'll know exactly where your business stands.
The Short Answer
QuickBooks Desktop as a whole is not being shut down. But Intuit has stopped selling some editions to new customers, and every version has an expiry date for Intuit's online services. Those are two different things, and mixing them up is where most of the confusion comes from.
- QuickBooks Desktop Enterprise is still sold and actively developed by Intuit.
- QuickBooks Desktop Pro, Premier and Mac are no longer sold by Intuit to new customers in the US. Remaining licenses are still available from authorized resellers while stock lasts.
- Every Desktop version gets about three years of Intuit's online services (updates, bank feeds, payroll) and then those services end. The software itself keeps running.
What Intuit Actually Changed
The changes came in stages, which is why the news felt like it never stopped.
Step 1: Desktop disappeared from Intuit's website
A few years ago Intuit stopped promoting Desktop on its own website and started steering new customers toward QuickBooks Online. That's when the first wave of "QuickBooks Desktop is discontinued" articles appeared. The software was still very much for sale through other channels.
Step 2: One-time licenses gave way to subscriptions
Next, Intuit moved Desktop to yearly subscriptions called Pro Plus and Premier Plus. You still installed the software on your own computer, but you paid every year instead of once. One-time licenses became harder and harder to find.
Step 3: No new Pro, Premier or Mac subscribers in the US
In 2024 Intuit stopped selling new Desktop Pro Plus, Premier Plus and Mac Plus subscriptions to customers in the US. Existing users could keep going, but the door closed for newcomers. That's the change most people are actually talking about when they say Desktop was discontinued.
Enterprise is the exception. Intuit still sells and updates QuickBooks Desktop Enterprise for businesses that need more users, advanced inventory or industry features. If anyone tells you all of QuickBooks Desktop is gone, Enterprise proves otherwise.
What "End of Support" Really Means
This is the part that matters most for your day-to-day work, and it's the part most articles skip.
Intuit supports each Desktop version for roughly three years after release. When that period ends, these services switch off:
- Security patches and program updates
- Online banking and bank feeds
- Payroll tax table updates and e-filing through QuickBooks
- Intuit's own phone and chat support
- Connected services like payments and some add-ons
Here's what does not stop:
- The program keeps opening and running
- Your company file stays exactly as it is
- Invoices, bills, estimates and reports keep working
- You can still enter bank transactions by hand or import them from your bank's download files
| Feature | Supported version | After support ends |
|---|---|---|
| Invoicing, bills, reports | Yes | Yes, keeps working |
| Company file access | Yes | Yes, nothing expires |
| Bank feeds inside QuickBooks | Yes | No, use manual entry or imports |
| QuickBooks payroll updates | Yes (with subscription) | No, use a separate payroll service |
| Security updates from Intuit | Yes | No |
| Intuit phone support | Yes | No, use a ProAdvisor or reseller |
For a lot of small businesses that do their own bookkeeping and use an outside payroll company, an unsupported version is perfectly workable. For a business that relies on bank feeds and in-house payroll every week, it's a bigger deal. Be honest with yourself about which group you're in.
Why Did Intuit Do This?
Recurring revenue. A one-time license brought Intuit a single payment, and then customers happily used the same version for five or eight years. A monthly subscription brings in money every month, forever. From a business point of view, the move makes complete sense for Intuit.
It wasn't because Desktop is a bad product. Plenty of accountants still prefer it for speed, for working offline and for keeping the data on their own machines. It was a financial decision, plain and simple.
Can You Still Buy QuickBooks Desktop in 2026?
Yes, with a few honest caveats.
- QuickBooks Desktop Enterprise can still be bought, including one-time licenses of earlier versions while stock lasts.
- QuickBooks Desktop Pro 2021 and Premier 2021 one-time licenses are still available from authorized resellers like us, but stock is limited and Intuit isn't making more. When it's gone, it's gone.
- QuickBooks Pro Plus yearly subscriptions are still available from some resellers for limited remaining seats.
- QuickBooks Mac 2021 one-time licenses are still available in limited numbers.
Keep in mind that 2021 versions are past Intuit's support window. They're a great fit if you want simple, offline bookkeeping with no monthly bill, and not the right fit if you need bank feeds and built-in payroll. Our QuickBooks Desktop pricing guide lays out every option side by side.
Should You Switch to QuickBooks Online?
Not automatically. QuickBooks Online is a good product for businesses that want to work from anywhere and don't mind a monthly bill that tends to rise every year. But if Desktop does what you need today, there's no rush to move just because of a headline.
Think about it this way:
- Stay on Desktop if you work mostly from one office, you like owning your software, and you can live without bank feeds or you're on a supported version.
- Look at Online if your team is spread out, you want automatic bank feeds and payroll without upgrades, and the monthly cost doesn't bother you.
- Look at Enterprise if you've outgrown Pro or Premier and need more users or serious inventory tools.
Our Desktop vs Online comparison goes much deeper on that decision.
Our Advice
Don't panic, and don't let anyone rush you into a decision. If you're running an older version and it does the job, keep using it and make sure you're backing up your company file. If you need a new license, buy it while one-time stock still exists. And if you need the newest features and full support, a supported subscription or Enterprise is the way to go.

Frequently Asked Questions
Will my QuickBooks Desktop stop working?
No. Your installed copy of QuickBooks Desktop keeps working after Intuit's support ends. What stops are the online services like bank feeds, payroll updates and security patches. Your company file and all your data stay right where they are.
Is QuickBooks Desktop 2021 still usable?
Yes. QuickBooks Desktop 2021 runs fine for core bookkeeping like invoicing, bills, reports and bank reconciliation. It no longer receives Intuit updates, bank feeds or QuickBooks payroll services, so plan around that.
Can I still buy a one-time QuickBooks Desktop license?
Yes, while stock lasts. Authorized resellers still have genuine one-time licenses of QuickBooks Desktop Pro 2021, Premier 2021, Enterprise and Mac 2021. Intuit isn't producing new ones, so supply is limited.
Is QuickBooks Enterprise being discontinued too?
No. QuickBooks Desktop Enterprise is still sold and updated by Intuit. It's the edition Intuit continues to develop for larger businesses that want to stay on desktop software.
What happens to my data if I move to QuickBooks Online later?
Intuit provides a tool to move a Desktop company file into QuickBooks Online. Most lists, balances and transactions come across, though some features don't have an exact match. Always keep a backup of your Desktop file before converting.
