QuickBooks Desktop for Mac: Everything You Need to Know in 2026
What it does, what it doesn't, and whether it's still the right choice.
Mac users have always had a slightly awkward relationship with QuickBooks. Most of the attention goes to the Windows versions, most of the help articles assume you're on a PC, and a lot of people aren't even sure a Mac version exists.
It does. QuickBooks Desktop for Mac is a real, native Mac application, and plenty of businesses run their books on it every day. Here's what you need to know before you buy it, including the honest bits about support and availability.
What Is QuickBooks Desktop for Mac?
QuickBooks Desktop for Mac is the Mac edition of QuickBooks Desktop. It installs on your Mac, stores your company file on your own computer, and works without an internet connection. It looks and feels like a Mac app, with Mac-style menus and keyboard shortcuts, rather than a Windows program squeezed onto a Mac.
It covers the everyday bookkeeping most small businesses need:
- Invoices, estimates and sales receipts
- Bills, vendor payments and expense tracking
- Bank and credit card reconciliation
- Customer and vendor centers
- Basic inventory tracking
- Sales tax tracking
- Standard reports like profit and loss, balance sheet and A/R aging
- Calendar and reminders for bills and invoices
How It Compares to QuickBooks Desktop for Windows
The Mac version is closest to QuickBooks Pro for Windows. It isn't a Mac version of Premier or Enterprise, so some advanced features aren't there.
| Feature | Mac | Pro (Windows) | Premier / Enterprise (Windows) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Core bookkeeping and invoicing | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Multi-user | Up to 3 users | Up to 3 users | 5 to 40 users |
| Industry editions | No | No | Yes |
| Sales orders and assemblies | No | No | Yes |
| Advanced inventory | No | No | Enterprise only |
| Native Mac interface | Yes | No | No |
| Runs without internet | Yes | Yes | Yes |
Good to know: Mac and Windows company files aren't the same format, but you can convert between them. QuickBooks for Mac can export a file for Windows and import one from Windows, which is handy if your accountant works on a PC.
Can You Still Buy QuickBooks Desktop for Mac?
This is where things changed. Intuit stopped selling QuickBooks Desktop for Mac subscriptions to new customers in the US, so you can't buy it from Intuit anymore.
What you can still buy is a one-time license of QuickBooks Mac 2021 from authorized resellers while stock lasts. We still have some. It's a genuine Intuit license, delivered by email, with no monthly or yearly fee. See QuickBooks Mac 2021.
Know what you're getting. QuickBooks Mac 2021 is past Intuit's support window. That means no Intuit updates, no bank feeds inside QuickBooks and no Intuit phone support. Core bookkeeping works normally, and you can still import bank downloads or enter transactions by hand.
Does It Run on the Newest Macs?
QuickBooks Mac 2021 was built for the macOS versions that were current at the time. Many people run it on newer Macs without trouble, including Apple silicon Macs, but because Intuit no longer updates it, there's no guarantee it will keep working on every future version of macOS. Before upgrading macOS on the Mac you use for bookkeeping, make a backup of your company file and check that QuickBooks still opens on the new version, ideally on a second Mac first.
Who Should Buy QuickBooks Desktop for Mac?
It's a great fit if:
- You work on a Mac and want your books on your own computer, not in the cloud
- You'd rather pay once than pay every month
- Your bookkeeping is fairly simple: invoices, bills, banking and standard reports
- You use an outside payroll service, or don't run payroll at all
It's probably not the right fit if:
- You need automatic bank feeds every day
- You want to run payroll inside QuickBooks
- You need industry features like detailed job costing or advanced inventory
- You need guaranteed compatibility with every future macOS update
What Are the Alternatives?
If the Mac version doesn't fit, you've got a few options:
- QuickBooks Online runs in any browser, including Safari on a Mac. It's a monthly subscription, but it includes bank feeds and gets updated automatically. Our Desktop vs Online comparison goes into detail.
- QuickBooks Desktop for Windows on a Mac. Some people run Windows QuickBooks through virtualization software. It works, but it adds a Windows license and a bit of complexity.
- Hosted QuickBooks. A hosting company runs Windows QuickBooks on their servers and you log in remotely from your Mac.
Our Advice
If you're on a Mac, like owning your software, and keep your bookkeeping simple, QuickBooks Mac 2021 is still a solid buy while stock lasts. Just go in with clear eyes about support and keep regular backups. If you rely on bank feeds or in-house payroll, QuickBooks Online is the safer choice.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is there a QuickBooks Desktop for Mac 2024?
Intuit's Mac desktop product moved to a yearly subscription in later years and is no longer sold to new customers in the US. The one-time license still available from resellers is QuickBooks Mac 2021.
Can I use QuickBooks for Mac and Windows in the same office?
Not on the same live company file at the same time. You can convert a file between Mac and Windows formats, which works well when an accountant on Windows needs a copy, but the whole team should work in one version day to day.
Does QuickBooks Mac 2021 work offline?
Yes. It's installed on your Mac and your company file is stored locally, so you can work with no internet connection at all.
How many users does QuickBooks for Mac support?
QuickBooks Desktop for Mac supports multiple users on a local network, up to three at the same time, similar to QuickBooks Pro for Windows.
Can I move my QuickBooks Online data to QuickBooks for Mac?
There isn't a direct one-click path from Online to Mac. The usual route is exporting from Online to a Windows Desktop file and then converting that file for Mac, which can be fiddly. For most people, starting fresh with opening balances is simpler.
