QuickBooks Desktop System Requirements: What Your Computer Really Needs
Official minimums, what we actually recommend, and multi-user server tips.
Nothing ruins the excitement of new software faster than an install that fails or a program that crawls. QuickBooks Desktop is a fairly demanding application, especially once your company file grows and a few people are using it at once.
Below are the requirements for QuickBooks Desktop 2021 through 2024 for Windows, along with what we actually recommend based on years of helping customers set it up. The official minimums will get it running. Our recommendations will keep it running well.
Quick Answer
If your computer was bought in the last five years, runs Windows 10 or 11 (64-bit), has at least 8 GB of RAM and a solid-state drive, QuickBooks Desktop will run comfortably for a small business.
Workstation Requirements
| Component | Minimum | What we recommend |
|---|---|---|
| Operating system | Windows 10 (64-bit), Windows 11 | Windows 11, fully updated |
| Processor | 2.4 GHz | Modern 4-core processor or better |
| Memory (RAM) | 8 GB | 16 GB, especially for Premier or Enterprise |
| Disk space | 2.5 GB for the program, plus room for company files | Solid-state drive (SSD) with plenty of free space |
| Screen | 1280 x 1024 | 1920 x 1080 or larger, ideally two monitors |
| Internet | Needed to download, activate and update | Broadband connection |
| Microsoft .NET | .NET Framework 4.8 (installed automatically) | Keep Windows Update turned on |
Older Windows versions: Windows 7 and 8.1 are no longer supported by Microsoft and shouldn't be used for financial software. QuickBooks 2021 may install on them, but we strongly recommend Windows 10 or 11.
Requirements by QuickBooks Version
| Version | Windows 10 | Windows 11 | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| QuickBooks 2021 | Yes | Yes | Install the latest 2021 release from the official link |
| QuickBooks 2022 | Yes | Yes | |
| QuickBooks 2023 | Yes | Yes | 64-bit Windows only |
| QuickBooks 2024 | Yes | Yes | 64-bit Windows only |
| QuickBooks 2018 and older | Often | Sometimes | Can be tricky on Windows 11, see our download guides |
Server Requirements for Multi-User Setups
If several people share one company file, the computer that stores the file (the server) matters more than the workstations.
| Component | What we recommend |
|---|---|
| Operating system | Windows Server 2016, 2019 or 2022, or a dedicated Windows 10/11 Pro computer for small offices |
| Memory | 8 GB minimum; add about 1 GB per active user beyond five |
| Storage | SSD, with the company file in a local folder (not a mapped network drive) |
| Network | Wired gigabit Ethernet for every workstation if possible |
| Software | QuickBooks Database Server Manager, the same year as the workstations |
Wired beats Wi-Fi. Multi-user QuickBooks is much faster and far less error-prone on a wired network. Many "QuickBooks is slow" and H202 complaints disappear when the main machines are plugged in with a cable.
Things That Cause Trouble Even on a Fast Computer
- Company files in OneDrive, Dropbox or Google Drive. Sync tools lock the file while QuickBooks is using it. Keep the live file in a normal local folder.
- Network-attached storage (NAS) boxes. Many can't run Database Server Manager, which QuickBooks needs for multi-user mode.
- Aggressive antivirus. Add QuickBooks to your antivirus exclusions to avoid slowdowns and connection errors.
- A nearly full drive. QuickBooks needs free space for temporary files during backups and rebuilds.
- Huge, old company files. Ten years of transactions can make any file sluggish. Our running slow guide covers clean-up options.
What About Mac?
QuickBooks Desktop for Mac is a separate product with its own requirements, and it runs on macOS rather than Windows. See our QuickBooks Desktop for Mac guide for details.
Before You Buy
Check your Windows version by pressing the Windows key + R, typing winver and pressing Enter. To check RAM, open Settings > System > About and look at "Installed RAM." If both look good, you're ready to go.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can QuickBooks Desktop run on 4 GB of RAM?
It may start, but it will be slow, especially with larger files or other programs open. We recommend at least 8 GB, and 16 GB for Premier, Enterprise or multi-user setups.
Does QuickBooks Desktop work on Windows 11?
Yes. QuickBooks Desktop 2021, 2022, 2023 and 2024 all run on Windows 11. Install the latest release of your version for the best compatibility.
Can I run QuickBooks Desktop on a Chromebook?
No. QuickBooks Desktop needs Windows. On a Chromebook you'd need QuickBooks Online or a remote hosting service.
Do I need a server for multi-user QuickBooks?
Not necessarily. Small offices often use one reliable Windows 10 or 11 Pro computer as the host. Larger teams benefit from a proper Windows Server.
Does QuickBooks Desktop need internet to run?
Only to download, activate and update it, and for online features like bank feeds. Day-to-day bookkeeping works offline.
