Important: QuickBooks Desktop 2020 Is Discontinued
Intuit has officially ended support for all QuickBooks Desktop 2020 products. That means no more security patches, no payroll updates, no bank feed connections, and no online backup. The software itself still works fine for basic bookkeeping — entering transactions, writing checks, running reports — but anything that requires a live connection to Intuit's servers is offline for good. If you rely on bank feeds or payroll, scroll down to our "Should You Upgrade?" section.
QuickBooks Desktop 2020 holds a special place for a lot of small business owners. It was the last year Intuit sold Pro and Premier as a one-time purchase — no subscription, no annual renewal, just buy it and own it. (We wrote about this in depth in our post on buying QuickBooks Desktop without a subscription.) Starting with the 2021 versions, Intuit switched Pro and Premier to mandatory subscriptions (Pro Plus and Premier Plus). So if you already have a 2020 license, you're sitting on the last of a kind.
Whether you're reinstalling on a new computer, setting up a second machine, or getting it loaded for the first time — this page covers everything you need to download, install, and activate QuickBooks Desktop 2020. All three versions follow the same process, so we've kept it in one place.

What Is QuickBooks Desktop 2020?
QuickBooks Desktop 2020 is Intuit's desktop accounting software from the 2020 release year. It runs on your Windows computer — not in a browser — and handles invoicing, expense tracking, reports, inventory, bill management, and everything else you need to keep your books straight.
This was a hugely popular version because it was the final year you could buy QuickBooks Pro and Premier outright without a subscription. A lot of businesses stocked up on 2020 licenses for exactly that reason. The software still works great for offline bookkeeping — it just won't connect to bank feeds, payroll services, or receive security updates anymore.
What Was New in 2020?
- Improved payment processing — Faster, more reliable payment handling for customer invoices and online payments.
- Automated statement charges — Set up recurring statement charges so you're not entering the same thing every month by hand.
- Enhanced search — Better search across transactions, customers, and vendors. Finds what you're looking for faster.
- Better check printing — Improved formatting and alignment when printing checks, fewer paper jams and reprints.
- Collapse and expand columns in reports — Click to collapse or expand report columns so you can focus on the data that matters without scrolling through everything.

After You Purchase — What You'll Receive
- Your Product License Key — A unique code that activates your copy. Keep this safe — you'll need it during setup and if you ever reinstall.
- Download Link — Direct link to download the installer for your version.
- Product Number — Identifies your specific version. Entered during installation.
- Order Confirmation Email — Your receipt with all license details and instructions.
Tip: Screenshot your license key email or write it down somewhere safe. If your computer crashes or you switch to a new machine, you'll need it again. This is especially important for 2020 since you can't just re-purchase a subscription — once your key is gone, it's gone.
QuickBooks Desktop 2020 — Download, Install, Activation & Get Started
Step 1: Check Your Email
After your purchase, check your inbox for the email with your download link and license key. Look in spam/junk if you don't see it.
Step 2: Click the Download Link
Click the link. The installer (about 300-500 MB) will start downloading. Give it a few minutes depending on your internet speed.
Step 3: Find the File
Check your Downloads folder for a file like QuickBooks.exe or Setup_QuickBooks.exe.
Step 4: Can't Find Your Setup File?
If you can't locate your QuickBooks setup file or the .exe file isn't in your Downloads folder, don't worry. You can download it directly from Intuit's official download page here: https://downloads.quickbooks.com/app/qbdt/products. Just select your version, enter your license and product number, and the download will start.
Step 5: Get Your License Key Ready
Have your Product Number and License Key from the email handy before you begin installation.
Installation — Step by Step
Same process for Pro, Premier, and Enterprise 20.0. Takes about 10-15 minutes.
Step 1: Close All Other Programs
Close browsers, email, Office, and especially antivirus software to avoid conflicts.
Step 2: Run the Installer
Double-click the setup file. If Windows asks "Do you want to allow this app to make changes?" — click Yes.
Step 3: Accept the License Agreement
Check the box for "I accept the terms" and click Next.
Step 4: Enter Your Product Number and License Key
Type or paste your Product Number and License Key carefully. No extra spaces. Click Next.
Step 5: Choose Installation Type
Express Install
— Best for most people. Automatic settings, default location.
Custom and Network Install
— Only if you need a specific folder or are setting up multi-user on a network.
Pick your option and click Next.
Step 6: Click Install
Hit Install and wait 5-10 minutes. Don't close the window or shut down your computer.
Step 7: Done — Open QuickBooks
Click Open QuickBooks on the completion screen. You'll also have a desktop icon.
How to Activate
Activation confirms your license is genuine. You have 30 days after install to activate.
Step 1:
Open QuickBooks. It may prompt you to activate automatically on first launch.
Step 2:
If not prompted, go to Help → Activate QuickBooks Desktop.
Step 3:
Follow the on-screen steps. Activation happens online in about 30 seconds.
Step 4:
Confirmation appears — click OK. You're all set.
Note about older versions: Because QuickBooks 2020 is discontinued, the activation servers can sometimes take a little longer to respond than they do for newer versions. If online activation seems slow or times out on the first try, give it a second attempt. It usually goes through.
Phone activation backup: If online doesn't work, go to Help → Activate → choose "activate by phone." Call the number shown, give them your validation code, and enter the confirmation code they give you. Phone activation is often the most reliable method for older versions like 2020.
Troubleshooting — Common Issues
Download Stops or Fails
Delete the partial file, check your internet, and try again. Switch browsers if it keeps failing.
Installation Fails or Crashes
Turn off antivirus, check disk space (need 2.5 GB free), restart your computer, and run the installer as Administrator (right-click → Run as administrator).
Error 1903 or 1904
Run Windows Update, install everything available, restart, and try again. If it persists, install Microsoft .NET Framework from Microsoft's website.
Error 3371 — Can't Load License Data
Close QuickBooks. Go to C:\ProgramData\Intuit\Entitlement Client\v8 and delete EntitlementDataStore.ecml. Reopen QuickBooks and re-enter your key.
QuickBooks Crashes on Open
Uninstall from Settings → Apps, restart, turn off antivirus, reinstall as Administrator, restart again.
"License Already In Use"
Uninstall from the old computer first. If you can't, call us and we'll help. Phone activation sometimes resolves this automatically.
Firewall or Antivirus Blocking QuickBooks
Add QuickBooks as a trusted app in your antivirus. In Windows Firewall: Control Panel → Allow an app through firewall → check QuickBooks for both Private and Public.
Activation Takes Longer Than Expected
This is normal for older versions. Intuit's activation servers still work for 2020, but they can be slower since the product is discontinued. Try once or twice online, and if it's not cooperating, use phone activation instead. That almost always works on the first try.
Should You Upgrade?
Let's be straight with you. If QuickBooks 2020 still does what you need, there's no reason to panic. Plenty of businesses run it every day for basic bookkeeping — entering transactions, printing checks, running reports, managing invoices. For that kind of work, it's still solid.
But here's where it falls short now that support has ended:
- No bank feeds — You can't automatically download transactions from your bank. Everything has to be entered manually or imported from CSV files.
- No payroll updates — Tax tables aren't updated, so running payroll through QuickBooks 2020 means incorrect withholdings. You'll need a third-party payroll service.
- No security patches — Any vulnerabilities discovered after the cutoff date won't be fixed. If your computer stores sensitive financial data, that's a real concern.
- No online backup — Intuit's cloud backup no longer works with 2020. Back up your files manually to an external drive or other cloud service.
If any of those are deal-breakers for you — especially bank feeds or payroll — it's honestly worth looking at a newer version. QuickBooks Desktop 2024 or 2025 will give you all of that back, plus better performance and full Windows 11 support. Browse our shop to see what's available, or read our guide on how to buy QuickBooks Desktop without a subscription. We carry all of them and can help you figure out which version makes sense for your situation.
Good news: If you do upgrade, your company file from QuickBooks 2020 will convert into any newer version. You won't lose your data — QuickBooks walks you through the conversion when you open your old file in the new version.
