- Product Number — This tells the installer which specific edition you bought. You'll type it in during setup.

Tip: Take a screenshot of your license key email or jot the key down on paper. If you ever need to move QuickBooks to a new computer or reinstall after a crash, that license key is your ticket back in.
QuickBooks Desktop 2023 — Download, Install, Activation & Get Started
Step 1: Open Your Purchase Email
Once your order goes through, you'll get an email with your download link and license key. If it's not in your inbox, check your spam or junk folder — it sometimes lands there.
Step 2: Click Your Download Link
Hit the download link in the email. The installer file is roughly 300-500 MB, so it may take a couple minutes depending on your connection speed.
Step 3: Locate the Installer
Head to your Downloads folder and look for a file named something like QuickBooks.exe or Setup_QuickBooks.exe.
Step 4: Can't Find Your Setup File?
If you can't locate your QuickBooks setup file or the .exe file isn't in your Downloads folder, don't worry. You can download it directly from Intuit's official download page here: https://downloads.quickbooks.com/app/qbdt/products. Just select your version, enter your license and product number, and the download will start.
Step 5: Have Your License Info Handy
Before you start the install, pull up your Product Number and License Key from that email so you're ready to go.
Installation — Step by Step
The installation process is identical whether you have Pro Plus, Premier Plus, or Enterprise. Plan on about 10-15 minutes from start to finish.
Step 1: Shut Down Other Programs
Close your web browser, email client, Microsoft Office, and any antivirus software. Running programs can interfere with the install.
Step 2: Launch the Installer
Double-click the setup file you downloaded. When Windows asks "Do you want to allow this app to make changes to your device?" — click Yes.
Step 3: Agree to the License Terms
Check the box that says "I accept the terms in the license agreement" and click Next to continue.
Step 4: Type In Your Product Number and License Key
Enter your Product Number and License Key exactly as shown in your email. Double-check for any extra spaces or typos. Click Next.
Step 5: Pick Your Installation Type
Express Install
— The easiest option for most users. Uses default settings and installs to the standard location.
Custom and Network Install
— Choose this only if you want to pick a specific folder or you're setting up multi-user access on a network.
Select your preference and click Next.
Step 6: Let It Install
Click Install and give it about 5-10 minutes to do its thing. Don't close the window or power down your machine while it's working.
Step 7: Launch QuickBooks
When the install wraps up, click Open QuickBooks on the completion screen. A shortcut will also appear on your desktop.
How to Activate
Activation verifies that your license is legitimate and ties it to your computer. You've got 30 days after installation to complete this step.
Step 1:
Launch QuickBooks Desktop 2023. In many cases, the activation prompt will pop up right away on the first time you open it.
Step 2:
If no prompt appears, navigate to Help → Activate QuickBooks Desktop from the top menu bar.
Step 3:
Walk through the on-screen instructions. The whole thing happens online and wraps up in about 30 seconds.
Step 4:
You'll see a confirmation message — hit OK and you're good to go.
If online activation doesn't work: Go to Help → Activate → select "activate by phone." Dial the number on screen, read your validation code to the rep, and type in the confirmation code they provide. Simple as that.
Troubleshooting — Common Issues
Download Stops Midway or Won't Start
Remove any partial download file, make sure your internet connection is stable, and try downloading again. If it keeps stalling, use a different web browser.
Installer Freezes or Gives an Error
Disable your antivirus temporarily, confirm you have at least 2.5 GB of free disk space, reboot your PC, and run the installer as Administrator (right-click the file → Run as administrator).
Error 1903 or 1904
Head to Windows Update, install all available updates, restart your computer, then try the installation again. If the error sticks around, download and install the latest Microsoft .NET Framework directly from Microsoft's website.
Error 3371 — License Data Won't Load
Exit QuickBooks completely. Navigate to C:\ProgramData\Intuit\Entitlement Client\v8 and delete the file called EntitlementDataStore.ecml. Open QuickBooks again and enter your license key when prompted.
QuickBooks Won't Open After Installing
Go to Settings → Apps, uninstall QuickBooks, restart your computer, temporarily disable antivirus, reinstall using Run as Administrator, and restart one more time.
"This License Is Already In Use"
You'll need to uninstall QuickBooks from the previous computer first. If that machine isn't accessible anymore, give us a call and we'll help you sort it out. Phone activation can sometimes clear this up on its own.
Antivirus or Firewall Blocking QuickBooks
Add QuickBooks to your antivirus whitelist as a trusted application. For Windows Firewall: go to Control Panel → Allow an app through Windows Firewall → make sure QuickBooks is checked for both Private and Public networks.
