Complete Guide for QuickBooks Pro 2014, Premier 2014 & Enterprise 14.0
Important: This Version Is Discontinued
Intuit ended all support for QuickBooks Desktop 2014 in May 2017. That means no updates, no security patches, no bank feeds, no payroll services, no online backup, and no payment processing. This version can only be used for offline bookkeeping — entering transactions, printing invoices, running reports from your local data. If you need any connected features, you will need a newer version.
QuickBooks Desktop 2014 has been around for over a decade now, but there are still businesses running it — and good reasons why. If you have a company file in this version, you already know the layout, your data lives here, and maybe you just need to keep the books going without paying for a subscription. We get it.
This page walks you through downloading, installing, and activating QuickBooks 2014 on a computer. Fair warning: because this version is so old, getting it running on a modern Windows machine takes a few extra steps. We'll cover those too.

What Is QuickBooks Desktop 2014?
QuickBooks Desktop 2014 was one of the last traditional perpetual-license versions of QuickBooks. You bought it once, installed it on your PC, and it was yours — no yearly subscription. It handled invoicing, bill tracking, expense management, bank reconciliation, reports, and all the core bookkeeping tasks small businesses rely on.
Back in its day, the 2014 version was a solid release. It ran well on Windows 7 and Windows 8 machines, and it introduced some genuinely useful workflow improvements. Today, it is strictly an offline accounting tool — no internet-connected features work anymore — but the core bookkeeping engine still does its job if that is all you need.
What Was New in 2014?
When the 2014 version shipped, these were the headline features Intuit added:
- Improved Income Tracker — A visual dashboard that showed your money coming in at a glance: unbilled time, open invoices, overdue payments, and paid invoices all in one spot.
- Document Center — You could attach receipts, contracts, and other documents directly to transactions. Made it easier to keep everything together without a separate filing system.
- Better Invoice and Payment Workflows — Streamlined the path from creating an invoice to receiving payment. Fewer clicks to get from A to B.
- Windows 8 Compatibility — This was a big deal at the time. The 2013 version had some rough edges on Windows 8, and the 2014 release smoothed those out considerably.
- Enhanced Reporting — More report customization options, faster report generation, and better filtering so you could pull exactly the data you were looking for.
Note: Features that depended on internet connectivity — like bank feeds, online payments, and payroll services — stopped working when Intuit cut support in May 2017. The features listed above that work offline still function.

Windows 10 and 11 Warning: QuickBooks 2014 was never designed for Windows 10 or Windows 11. It does not run natively on either. You may be able to get it working using Windows Compatibility Mode (we cover that in the troubleshooting section below), but expect quirks. If you are on a modern PC, read the "Should You Upgrade?" section at the bottom of this page before investing time in the install.
Windows only. Not compatible with Mac.
After You Purchase — What You'll Receive
- Your Product License Key — The unique code that activates your copy. Guard this carefully. Since online activation no longer works for this version, your license key is essential for phone activation.
- Download Link — Direct link to download the 2014 installer file.
- Product Number — Identifies whether you have Pro, Premier, or Enterprise 14.0. You will type this in during installation.
- Order Confirmation Email — Your receipt with all license details and setup instructions.
Tip: Print your license key email or save it somewhere you won't lose it. With a version this old, you cannot recover your key through Intuit's website anymore. If you lose it, you'll need to contact us for help.
QuickBooks Desktop 2014 — Download, Install, Activation & Get Started
Step 1: Check Your Email
After your purchase, look for the email containing your download link and license key. Check your spam or junk folder if you do not see it within a few minutes.
Step 2: Click the Download Link
Click the link in the email. The installer file will begin downloading — it is roughly 200-400 MB depending on the version. Shouldn't take more than a few minutes on most connections.
Step 3: Locate the Downloaded File
Open your Downloads folder and look for the setup file. It will be named something like QuickBooks2014.exe or Setup_QuickBooks2014.exe.
Step 4: Can't Find Your Setup File?
If you can't locate your QuickBooks setup file or the .exe file isn't in your Downloads folder, don't worry. You can download it directly from Intuit's official download page here: https://downloads.quickbooks.com/app/qbdt/products. Just select your version, enter your license and product number, and the download will start.
Step 5: Have Your License Key Ready
Pull up your Product Number and License Key before you start the install. You will need both during the setup process.
Installation — Step by Step
The installation process is the same across Pro, Premier, and Enterprise 14.0. Plan for about 10-15 minutes, possibly longer on older hardware.
Step 1: Close Everything Else
Shut down your browser, email client, Microsoft Office, and particularly your antivirus. Antivirus programs are the number one cause of installation failures with older QuickBooks versions.
Step 2: Run the Installer as Administrator
Right-click the setup file and choose Run as administrator. This is important — especially on Windows 10 or 11 where permissions are stricter than what QuickBooks 2014 expects. If Windows asks "Do you want to allow this app to make changes?" — click Yes.
Step 3: Accept the License Agreement
Check the box to accept the terms and click Next.
Step 4: Enter Your Product Number and License Key
Type your Product Number and License Key exactly as they appear in your email. Watch for extra spaces or misread characters (zeroes vs. the letter O is a common mix-up). Click Next.
Step 5: Choose Your Installation Type
Express Install
— Recommended for most users. Puts everything in the default location with standard settings.
Custom and Network Install
— Only pick this if you need to install to a specific folder or you are setting up multi-user access across a network.
Select your option and click Next.
Step 6: Click Install
Hit Install and let it run. This usually takes 5-10 minutes. Do not close the window, do not restart your machine, just let it finish.
Step 7: Finish Up and Launch
When the installation finishes, click Open QuickBooks. You should also see a QuickBooks 2014 icon on your desktop.
How to Activate (Phone Activation Required)
Here is the part that trips people up with the 2014 version: online activation no longer works. Intuit shut down the activation servers for this release years ago. You will need to activate by phone. It sounds old-fashioned, but it works and only takes a few minutes.
Step 1:
Open QuickBooks 2014. It will likely prompt you to activate right away. If online activation fails (it will), look for the option to activate by phone.
Step 2:
If you are not prompted automatically, go to Help → Activate QuickBooks Desktop → choose Activate by phone.
Step 3:
QuickBooks will display a Validation Code on your screen. Call the phone number shown and read this code to the representative (or enter it into the automated system).
Step 4:
You will receive a Confirmation Code in return. Type that code back into QuickBooks and click Next. That is it — your copy is activated.

Troubleshooting — Common Issues
Running on Windows 10 or 11 — Compatibility Mode (Critical)
This is the single most important troubleshooting step for QuickBooks 2014 on a modern computer. The software was never built for Windows 10 or 11, so you need to trick it into thinking it is running on an older version of Windows:
- Find the QuickBooks 2014 shortcut on your desktop (or the .exe file in the install folder).
- Right-click it and select Properties.
- Go to the Compatibility tab.
- Check "Run this program in compatibility mode for:" and select Windows 7 or Windows 8.
- Also check "Run this program as an administrator".
- Click Apply , then OK.
Without this step, the program may not launch at all, or it may crash randomly during use.
Installer Fails with .NET Framework Errors
QuickBooks 2014 depends on an older version of the .NET Framework. Modern Windows ships with newer versions but may not have the older ones installed. Go to Control Panel → Programs → Turn Windows features on or off → check .NET Framework 3.5 (includes .NET 2.0 and 3.0). Let Windows install it, restart, and try the QuickBooks installer again.
Download Stops or Fails
Delete whatever partially downloaded, make sure your internet connection is stable, and try downloading again. If it keeps failing, try a different browser — sometimes Chrome handles large downloads better than Edge, or vice versa.
Installation Freezes or Crashes
Disable your antivirus completely before installing (re-enable it afterward). Make sure you have at least 2.5 GB of free disk space. Restart your computer, then right-click the installer and choose Run as administrator.
Error 3371 — Can't Load License Data
Close QuickBooks. Navigate to C:\ProgramData\Intuit\Entitlement Client\v8 and delete the file called EntitlementDataStore.ecml. Open QuickBooks again and re-enter your license key when prompted.
QuickBooks Opens But Displays Incorrectly
On high-resolution screens (common on newer laptops), QuickBooks 2014 can look blurry or have tiny text. Right-click the QuickBooks shortcut → Properties → Compatibility tab → click "Change high DPI settings" → check "Override high DPI scaling behavior" and set it to System. Apply and relaunch.
"License Already In Use"
If you moved from an old computer and did not uninstall first, the license may still be registered to that machine. Phone activation usually resolves this. If it does not, give us a call and we will help you get it cleared up.

Should You Upgrade? (Honest Take)
We are not going to sugarcoat this. QuickBooks Desktop 2014 is over ten years old. Here is the reality of what you are working with:
What No Longer Works:
- Bank feeds and automatic transaction downloads — gone
- Online bill payment and invoice payment links — gone
- Payroll processing — gone
- Security updates — none since May 2017
- Online backup — gone
- Technical support from Intuit — gone
- Smooth operation on Windows 10/11 — not guaranteed
What Still Works:
- Creating and printing invoices
- Entering bills and writing checks
- Manual bank reconciliation
- Running all local reports
- Managing your chart of accounts
- Tracking customers, vendors, and inventory (locally)
- Journal entries, budgeting, and class tracking
Our honest recommendation: If you are just keeping the books for a small operation and you do not need bank feeds or payroll, the 2014 version can still handle the basics. But if your business is growing, if you need to connect to your bank, or if you are tired of fighting compatibility issues every time Windows updates — it is time to move to a current version. The jump in reliability and features is significant.
