QuickBooks Desktop 2022 — Download, Install, Activation & Get Started
Step 1: Open Your Confirmation Email
Once your order goes through, you'll get an email containing your download link and license key. If it hasn't shown up after a few minutes, peek in your spam or junk folder.
Step 2: Start the Download
Click your download link. The installer file is around 300-500 MB, so it may take a few minutes depending on your connection speed.
Step 3: Locate the Installer
Look in your Downloads folder for a file named something like QuickBooks.exe or Setup_QuickBooks.exe.
Step 4: Gather Your License Info
Before running the installer, make sure you have your Product Number and License Key from the confirmation email within reach.
Installation — Step by Step
The installation is the same whether you have Pro Plus, Premier Plus, or Enterprise. Plan for about 10-15 minutes from start to finish.
Step 1: Shut Down Other Applications
Close your web browser, email client, Microsoft Office, and — this one matters — your antivirus software. These can interfere with the installation.
Step 2: Launch the Installer
Double-click the setup file you downloaded. When Windows pops up asking "Do you want to allow this app to make changes to your device?" — click Yes.
Step 3: Agree to the License Terms
Check the "I accept the terms in the license agreement" box, then click Next.
Step 4: Type In Your Product Number and License Key
Enter your Product Number and License Key exactly as they appear in your email. Watch out for extra spaces or mixed-up characters. Click Next.
Step 5: Pick Your Installation Type
Express Install
— The right choice for most people. Uses default settings and puts QuickBooks in the standard location.
Custom and Network Install
— Only pick this if you want a non-default folder or you're configuring multi-user access over a network.
Select your preference and click Next.
Step 6: Let It Install
Click Install and let it do its thing — usually takes 5-10 minutes. Don't close the window or power off your machine while it's working.
Step 7: Launch QuickBooks
When the installation wraps up, click Open QuickBooks. A shortcut will also appear on your desktop for future use.
How to Activate
Activation verifies that your license is legitimate. You've got 30 days from installation to complete it, but there's no reason to wait.
Step 1:
Launch QuickBooks. Most of the time, an activation prompt will appear automatically on the first run.
Step 2:
If the prompt doesn't show up, go to Help → Activate QuickBooks Desktop from the menu bar.
Step 3:
Walk through the on-screen prompts. The whole process happens over the internet and typically finishes in under a minute.
Step 4:
You'll see a confirmation message — click OK and you're good to go.
If online activation won't cooperate: Head to Help → Activate → select "activate by phone." Dial the number displayed, read your validation code to the representative, and they'll give you a confirmation code to type in.
Troubleshooting — Common Issues
Download Stalls or Won't Complete
Remove the partial download file, verify your internet connection is stable, and try the download again. If the same browser keeps giving you trouble, switch to a different one.
Installer Freezes or Errors Out
Disable your antivirus, confirm you have at least 2.5 GB of free disk space, reboot your computer, then right-click the installer and choose "Run as administrator."
Error 1903 or 1904
Open Windows Update, install all available updates, restart your machine, and attempt the installation again. If the error keeps showing up, download and install the latest Microsoft .NET Framework from Microsoft's site.
Error 3371 — License Data Won't Load
Exit QuickBooks completely. Navigate to C:\ProgramData\Intuit\Entitlement Client\v8 and delete the file called EntitlementDataStore.ecml. Open QuickBooks again and enter your license key when prompted.
QuickBooks Crashes Right After Opening
Uninstall QuickBooks through Settings → Apps, restart your PC, temporarily turn off antivirus, reinstall using "Run as administrator," and restart one more time.
"This License Is Already In Use"
If you moved to a new computer, uninstall QuickBooks from the old one first. Can't get to the old machine? Give us a call and we'll sort it out. Phone activation can sometimes clear this up on its own.
Firewall or Antivirus Blocking QuickBooks
Add QuickBooks to your antivirus program's trusted applications list. For Windows Firewall: go to Control Panel → Allow an app through Windows Firewall → make sure QuickBooks is checked for both Private and Public networks.
